Illinois – The Illini return nearly everyone including all five starters and sixth man from last year’s 21-15 team. Then throw in their talented young players and you have a potential Sweet 16 squad, maybe better. Leading the way for Bruce Weber’s team is 1st team All-Big Ten guard Demetri McCarney, a 6’3” senior who averaged 15.1 PPG. Then throw in a pair of sophomore guards in 6’3” DJ Richardson and 6’4” Brandon Paul and frontcourt players in 6’9” senior Mike Davis and 7’1” senior Mike Tisdale. Sixth man 6’9” senior Bill Cole also gives them frontcourt depth. The Illini will also look for freshman Jereme Richmond and Meyers Leonard to give them quality minutes off the bench. Outside of conference play, the Illini will face Texas, North Carolina, Gonzaga and Missouri who were all ranked in preseason polls. Illinois will certainly have a tough road to make the tournament, but will certainly be rewarded for strength of schedule if it comes down to that.

The College Football landscape has changed, but not by nearly as much as many anticipated. First Colorado ditched the Big XII for the Pac-10 and then Nebraska left the Big XII for the Big Ten. The Big XII Conference has made a huge play at keeping Texas and the rest of their conference alive with a proposed TV plan that willl earn the Longhorns as much money as the top schools in the country.
The Pac-10 will now search for a 12th member to fill their conference ranks after Texas and Company appear to be staying put. Utah has been mentioned out of the Mountain West Conference. Ironically the Big XII now has 10 teams and the Big Ten has 12.
